Carbon monoxide (CO) is known as the “silent killer” because it is a colourless, odourless, poisonous gas. At high enough levels it can kill a person in minutes It is produced by the incomplete burning of solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels. Appliances fuelled with natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), oil, kerosene, coal, or wood may produce CO. Each year in the UK around 600 people are admitted to hospital and about 50 people die in their homes from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. It is important that everyone is aware of these dangers in order to prevent further deaths.
